Why thinking “Hair is just hair” is killing your beard
“I just use regular shampoo in the shower to clean my beard.”
“If you have treatment for beard, why are you bald?”
“Hair is just hair.”
If you still make any of these above statements, your beard outcome likely subscribes to the following:
- You sport a mane that has more patches than a Lagos or a New York City street after a rain storm.
- Your fingers make routine visits to scratch the parched underneath surface of your bearded face throughout the day.
- You likely fell for an ad declaring “our oil treats both baldness and grows your beard.
- You’re the one whose beard makes noise throughout the barbershop as your barber struggles to pass a comb through your dry and brittle beard.
Yes….I am exaggerating a bit. However, if you’ve said any of those statements, you’re the one telling on yourself.
Thankfully, some of you reading this are saying “The writer of this article is talking about those other guys!” You’re the one whose beard is important to you. You wake up and make a daily investment into your beard knowing it requires special and unique care. It’s the reason why you will purchase NYGC family of beard products after reading this article (another cheap plug). But if you are one of those guys, fear not. It’s not my job to make you feel guilty, although that was my intention. My actual job as the owner of New York Grooming Company is to guide you to the promise land of bearded prominence. To move you out of the world of “struggle beards” to having your mane routinely clutched on by a certain someone. So allow me to help get you there.

Facial hair is often triggered during the onset of puberty as Beard Hairs are controlled by testosterone. Beard hair also relies on natural oils. Scalp hair is neither dependent on hormones or natural oils to grow.
Regular Shampoo on your beard is a NO-NO!
Now equipped with cursory knowledge on the differences between Facial and Scalp hair, you should have a better understanding of why hair shampoo may be harmful to your beard. Hair shampoo tends to have harsher chemicals meant to strip away oils from the oiler scalp. Knowing that your beard relies on natural oils, regular hair shampoo would strip an essential part of your beard’s make up….resulting in the patches, itchiness, and less than stellar beard growth. This is why….
