Why Beard Oil does NOT moisturize your beard
Beard Oil. The magic elixir touted to fix all things tied to your beard. Most Beard Oils come with the promise of “moisturizing” and “hydrating” your beard (along with a bunch of false promises we will address at a later time). While Beard Oil does play a role in moisturizing your beard, your favorite Beard Oil (which should be NYGC) aren’t responsible for providing those things. So the Beard Oil alone that you applied to your beard only offered you a false sense of moisturizing your beard. So in our latest installment of our Beard Maintenance Program, we reveal the truth on how Beard Oils work more as winter coat in providing moisture than actually producing it, and why water plays a key role in making your beard oil relevant.
Beard Oil ALONE may contribute to drying your beard
Yes….you read that correctly. Imagine the state of your beard: Dry, parched, and in need of moisture. You reach for a bottle of what I’m sure is NYGC Beard Oil and apply it onto your dry beard. Brushing or combing it in, you admire the new shine you’ve added to your beard.
Nice!!!!
But what you are likely unaware of is that most oils sit ATOP of hair strands rather than penetrate it. So underneath that oil resides the same old dry, parched hair in need of moisture. So as your non-NYGC brand of beard oil refers itself as a moisturizer, that is totally false.
Only one thing moisturizes hair….WATER
Beard oil is effective as a moisturizer for your skin underneath your beard. The only thing that hydrates and moisturizes your hair is WATER. Water alone, however, offers the same end result as applying beard oil alone. As the water evaporates, the moisture disappears and leaves your hair shriveled, brittle, and dry. So both your beard oil and water must work together in order to accomplish the goal of moisturizing your beard.
The complicated marriage of Oil and Water
To describe the relationship between oil and water is that of two entities that do everything in their power to remain separate and apart. I’m sure you have seen a glass of water with droplets of oil floating along the surface. It’s a complicated relationship, but like all relationships, they manage to work well together IF putting in the proper work. So in the relationship between oil and water, oil acts as a sealant that works to lock and seal the moisture IN your hair. So here is the key step in making sure you have a moisturized beard.
- Before applying oil to your beard, make sure its dampened with water. A beard can only be moistened by water. Start there.
- Then apply NYGC Beard Oil (another shameless plug) throughout your beard to coat and seal in moisture.
