Who we are
When I reflect on my travels, the significant role that hair has played throughout my life is one of obsession and a drive for excellence. Going back to my early teenage years in mid-1980s Brooklyn, New York City, an OG from the neighborhood guided me, providing a stocking cap, a tin can of “Sportin Waves” grease, and a plan to achieve my eventual 360-degree waves. This influence was surpassed years later by Brooklyn rapper extraordinaire Big Daddy Kane, whose “Cameo cut” flat-top emerged as I patiently grew my hair to match his iconic style, which would be imitated worldwide.
In each instance, I received the step-by-step guidance necessary to reach my hair goals. However, when I decided to focus on maximizing facial hair growth, I encountered an uncharted path with limited wisdom from past beard growers. I realized that in the realm of beard care, there were many promises of “quick fixes,” yet tailored maintenance for Black hair was lacking. Beard hair differs from scalp hair, and achieving proper beard growth depends on various factors, necessitating different management techniques. This realization led me to create my own beard products, starting with organic ingredients sourced from my parents’ native Nigeria. As my beard journey progressed, it introduced me to other parts of Africa where I discovered various oils and extracts that enriched my products, appealing to my expanding customer base in New York. Thus, in 2019, the New York Grooming Company was officially established.
